Producer Spotlight: U Mes U

By Abbey White
Drive 40 minutes West of Barcelona and you will find yourself in the beautiful town of Font-rubi, The home of the U Mes U. The winery is surrounded by beautiful fields of flowering Xarel-lo and Macabeo, a mixture of young vines (7 years old) and old vines (45 years old). The easiest way to differentiate between the two vines is the size of the leaves, Macabeo has bigger, thicker leaves growing on the vine. The winery is located at around 400m in altitude, U Mes U have vines all over the Font-rubi area with their Pinot Noir and Parraleda grown at the highest altitude vines they have.

We were welcomed with the news that D.O Penedes is the first in the world to be completely organic, this isn’t anything new for U Mes U, which has been operating organically for years.  Maria (the third generation of the family to work in the winery) and the team welcomed us to the winery that was built in the year 2000. After touring the fields we headed inside for a tasting of there range! One of the best parts of visiting around this time is you get to try the newest vintages of wines. The new Vintage of Anais Tinto jas been made with 100% Garnacha and is a beautiful update, The group where the first to try the new Semi-seco which has been made for Ultracomida, a stunning sweeter style cava with notes of candied apple and pear with brioche notes alongside those normal cava notes, this isn’t to be scoffed at and for me it is like prosecco and Champagne have had a baby taking the best parts of both.
Our tasting ended with a glass of Caelus, named after the Roman god of sky, rain and wines and is the pinacle of there creations. It is a Blanc de Noirs, meaning it is white sparkling made 100% using red grapes, this one uses 100% Pinot Noir and has been aged for over 60 months. This whole drinking experience was elevated by the fact we where drinking it in the U Mes U caves, surrounded by aging cava and plenty of damp!
