Coming soon: Triga (Bodegas Volver)

It’s a miracle anything grows here at all.  Our small convoy manoeuvres a dirt track hemmed in by the dusty mountain ranges of Las Sierras de Salinas, Sierra de la Sima, and la Sierra de Umbria.
We’re being led by Rafa, owner of Bodegas Volver & considered to be one of the pre-eminent winemakers operating this cross section of D.O.’s, Alicante, Jumillia & La Mancha.
He singles out a short stretch of rubble, home to ranks of stubby monastrell vines. Most wouldn’t look twice; to the average eye, they have seen better days.

“It’s remarkable no? This vineyard was virtually abandoned.  Which fool would want to work these 80 year old vines? It’s a lot of effort when you consider each of them will barely yield a single bottle.”
Rafa spots something.  He treads over to one of the vines and kicks it side on until its main branch hits the ground.  He ushers us in...  “See, it was barely hanging on, it’s dead”
That’s one bottle down…
Do you lose many vines each year? “A few.” He points out the gaping holes, “When they are gone that’s it.  You can’t plant new ones because the older vines are so deep rooted, the young ones just wouldn’t have a chance.” It’s a vine eat vine world with no irrigation and barely any rainfall (the area last recorded some 6 months ago). That’s the way natural selection goes.

Those vines go on to create Triga, the wineries premiere offering & it is a revelation. "Bright purple. Heady, expansive aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, incense and vanilla, with a sexy floral nuance building in the glass. It stains the palate with sweet boysenberry and violet pastille flavours, showing outstanding depth, vibrancy and juicy acidity. The lingering finish is shaped by supple, slow-building tannins, displaying excellent tenacity and repeating floral character."
Triga will be landing soon & will be very limited in supply.
