The abundance of native grape varieties fostered an early start to Spanish viticulture with evidence of grape pips dating back to between 4000 and 3000 BC, long before the wine-growing culture of the Phoenicians founded the trading post of Cádiz around 1100 BC. Today Rioja is the best known but Spain produces a great variety of spectacular wines.

100% Merlot. Tasting Notes: On the nose, this wine shows great fruit intensity and spices. On the palate, it is smooth with abundant tannins and a rich black fruit character. The finish is long and pleasant. The Bodega was created in 1989, but work on the project started at the end of the 70s, when Enrique Mendoza started buying bottles and investing into other bodegas. He then started planting his first vines (only 100) out of which he made his first wine barrel for his own consumption. He then planted another 2000 vines of different varieties. Naturally, this amount of wine became too much for his own consumption but not enough to start a proper business. The logical progression was to plant yet more vines. To do so, the Mendoza family decided to move from Alfaz to Villena and to plant 120,000 vines of Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay. As a consequence, Enrique Mendoza has vineyards in two parts of Alicante: Alfaz del Pi (5ha) where the wines are aged in barriques and where the two Moscatel varieties are grown (Moscatel de Alejandria and the French Moscatel de Frontignac) and Villena (80ha) where the Cabernet Sauvignon (50% of the plantings), Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Perellada are planted.

View product detailsManzanilla is the appellation name for a Fino sherry which is raised at Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a relatively cool, humid seaside village. The resultant sherry has a definite tang of the sea, and perhaps a suggestion of camomile flower (manzanilla is Spanish for camomile). Much finer, and more delicate than finos from Jerez, inland, and usually bottled at about 15% alcohol.
DZ is a manzanilla pasada, meaning it has been aged for a relatively long time (8 years, compared to manzanilla standard of about 4 ½). The wine is bottled, however, before the flor yeast can die off, thus avoiding any amontillado characters. The oyster shell suggestion in normal manzanilla becomes a richer scent of abalone, and the wine has a fabulous builders' lime streak which directly reflects the flavour of the chalky 'albariza' soils in which it's grown.

Marques de Riscal Reserva Rioja
Grape Variety: Tempranillo 90%, Graciano y Mazuelo 10%
Marqués de Riscal Reserva wines are mainly made from grapes from tempranillo vines over 15 years’ old, grown in the best clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa. This variety withstands oak and bottle ageing well thanks to its good balance of acidity and fine tannin. The Graciano and Mazuelo varieties, whose presence in the blend does not exceed 10%, provide crispness and a lively colour. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and the maceration time is never more than 12 days. Riscal reservas spend around two years in American-oak casks, producing a wine which corresponds to the classic Rioja style: fresh, fine, elegant and very suitable for laying down for many years. Before release for sale it spends a minimum of one year rounding off in the bottle.
Cherry-red colour with good robe. Spicy, balsamic aromas of great complexity, with notes of ripe dark berries and light toasted nuances. On the palate it is full and tasty, with good structure and rounded, elegant tannins. The finish is long and fresh, with a slight reminder of the fine oak.

Delgado Zuleta is the oldest family owned winery in the Jerez & Manzanilla districts producing sherry for more than two and a half centuaries. 100% Moscatel de Alejandría. Tasting Notes: On the nose, the fresh Moscatel notes combine with honey and balsamic aromas. On the palate, it is light with a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity and a great long finish. This wine will be the perfect match for most desserts, lemon tart in particular. The Bodega was created in 1989, but work on the project started at the end of the 70s, when Enrique Mendoza started buying bottles and investing into other bodegas. He then started planting his first vines (only 100) out of which he made his first wine barrel for his own consumption. He then planted another 2000 vines of different varieties. Naturally, this amount of wine became too much for his own consumption but not enough to start a proper business. The logical progression was to plant yet more vines. To do so, the Mendoza family decided to move from Alfaz to Villena and to plant 120,000 vines of Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay. As a consequence, Enrique Mendoza has vineyards in two parts of Alicante: Alfaz del Pi (5ha) where the wines are aged in barriques and where the two Moscatel varieties are grown (Moscatel de Alejandria and the French Moscatel de Frontignac) and Villena (80ha) where the Cabernet Sauvignon (50% of the plantings), Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Perellada are planted.

Tasting Notes The first impression in the glass is of practically no oxidation, with bright yellow-green hues. The foam is dense and persistent, providing an inkling of its structure in the mouth. Looking at the centre of the glass we can see a uniform line of microscopic bubbles rising to the surface. The nose is dominated by tangy fruit and floral aromas. In the background we find fermentative notes from the wine´s transformation in the bottle (honey, vanilla, liqueur). Honeyed yet fresh in the mouth, thanks to its significant acidity. The combination of fruit, acidity and fine lees results in a surprising sensation of fullness that invites one to continue tasting it. The fruity notes return in the aftertaste, with predominant spices that, for several seconds, leave a very pleasant memory. The cava is excellent for drinking straight away; in addition, the characteristics of the grapes provide it with great ageing potential.

One of the keys in cava production is the individualised treatment of the base wines. In the tasting held in July at the headquarters of the Rias Baixas DO Regulatory Council, organised by the Galician Association of Tasters, Albariño Valtea 2010, obtained 94 points out of 100, placing it in one of the top positions this year. Special Selection comes from vineyards that are about 40 years old in the mountains of Axarquía, situated at an altitude of approximately 400 m. After the manual harvest, the grapes are brought to a selection table in the winery and, later, to the press. Fermentation is carried out completely in stainless steel tanks and, as is characteristic of this type of wine, the alcohol comes exclusively from grape fermentation; this is stopped by cooling once the desired alcohol content has been reached.
